EXECUTIVE MANAGEMENT/GENERAL COUNSEL EXPERIENCE

After litigating insurance defense cases until 1982, Katherine was recruited as part of a team of officers to run off the Armco Steel Group of insurance and reinsurance companies.  As Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary for Universal Reinsurance Corporation in Cincinnati, and several of its affiliates (domestic and foreign), she was primarily responsible for negotiating and managing hundreds of millions of dollars in contracts, audit issues, recoveries and letters of credit, as well as supervising litigation and arbitrations to successful resolution.  She was also responsible for general corporate matters including transactional mergers, compliance and for developing business strategies and solutions.  She managed a large team/staff and coordinated with upper management in various departments such as financial services, accounting, claims, actuarial and systems.

 

ReMedi

2008-Present:  Founder, Chief Executive Officer and Chair of the Board for the Reinsurance Mediation Institute (ReMedi), a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering integrity in the mediation process in reinsurance and insurance disputes, certifying qualified mediators, establishing guidelines, protocols and a code of ethics, and offering education on mediation as a practical solution to re/insurance matters.

 

LITIGATION, ARBITRATION/MEDIATION AND OTHER COMMERCIAL AND GENERAL PRACTICE EXPERIENCE

In 1990, Katherine started her own law firm and has represented numerous companies, including those referenced above, in various matters.  Most of her practice has been focused on insurance coverage and defense, and reinsurance. For example, she has represented clients in reinsurance arbitrations, insurance defense litigation and insurance coverage cases, including Pittsburgh Corning, Babcock and Wilcox, Halliburton/Dresser, Federal Mogul, Asarco and Foster Wheeler.  These cases have been extensively litigated, arbitrated and/or mediated over many years and involved negotiations of billions of dollars and coordination with dozens of counsel as well as judges, trustees and class representatives.

 

She has also counseled clients in contract drafting and interpretation, negotiations, letters of credit disputes and recoveries, and represented clients in a variety of commercial and general legal matters. Additionally she has served as the Reinsurance Consultant to the Ohio Insurance Liquidation Office until 2008.  In the past several years, most of her professional work has been focused on providing arbitration and mediation services to the reinsurance and insurance industry, and she has assisted numerous parties in reaching highly satisfactory, cost-efficient and sensible results.

 

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Indianapolis, Indiana 2004-present::  Dispute resolution services, including arbitrator and mediator services, and reinsurance consultation, including recoveries, commutations, audits, runoff  management, contract evaluations, and LOC/trust matters, and frequent contributor and speaker in various publications and forums, including Lexis Nexis (Mealeys).

 

Ohio Insurance Department, Liquidation Office:  Columbus, Ohio 2004-2008: Reinsurance Consultant, supervising reinsurance recoveries, arbitrations, mediations, disputes, negotiations, commutations, billings, claims issues and all matters relating to reinsurance (assumed and ceded) for the companies in liquidation and rehabilitation.
